چکیده

Using insitu digital image correlation to obtain full-field measurements, we study the intermartensitic transformations in single crystal NiFeGa. Full-field strain measurements identify the coexistence of modulated martensite phases during the first plateau of the multistage stress-strain curve at room temperature. At a higher temperature, the measurements indicate the bypassing of one of the modulated phases. Strain as high as 13% is measured as a result of the transformation to the intermediate monoclinic modulated and final tetragonal phase. Based on the full-field strain measurements, the phase fractions during the nucleation and the progression of the transformation are obtained. The evolution of the local strain and the phase fractions prove critical in explaining strain softening, hysteresis and other phenomena observed in the stress-strain curves. * Text only

Thermal and stress-induced martensitic transformations in NiFeGa single crystals under tension and compression

Heat treatment and stress state effects on the martensitic transformation in [001] and [123] oriented single crystal Ni54Fe19Ga27 alloys are determined. Characteristic temperatures increase for longer aging times and higher hold temperatures. The non-aged [001] crystals exhibit the smallest stress hysteresis and lowest critical stress in tension. The experimental results are interpreted based o...

EFFECT OF SPIRAL DESIGN ON CRYSTAL ORIENTATION DURING SINGLE CRYSTAL GROWTH

Geometrical design of the spiral crystal selector can affect crystal orientation in the final single crystal structure. To achieve a better understanding of conditions associated with the onset of crystal orientation in a spiral crystal selector, temperature field was investigated using three-dimensional finite element method during the process. Different geometries of spiral crystal selec...

بررسی توزیع انرژی ذخیره شده تغییر شکل در داخل پلی‌کریستال فلزی با استفاده از تئوری کریستال پلاستیسیته بر مبنای چگالی نابجایی

The stored deformation energy in the dislocation structures in a polycrystalline metal can provide a sufficient  driving force to move grain boundaries during annealing. In this paper, a thermodynamically-consistent three-dimensional, finite-strain and dislocation density-based crystal viscoplasticity constitutive theory has been developed to describe the distribution of stored energy and dislo...

Mechanical Characteristics and Failure Mechanism of Nano-Single Crystal Aluminum Based on Molecular Dynamics Simulations: Strain Rate and Temperature Effects

Besides experimental methods, numerical simulations bring benefits and great opportunities to characterize and predict mechanical behaviors of materials especially at nanoscale. In this study, a nano-single crystal aluminum (Al) as a typical face centered cubic (FCC) metal was modeled based on molecular dynamics (MD) method and by applying tensile and compressive strain loadings its mechanical ...

Structural aspects of displacive transformations: what can optical microscopy contribute? Dehydration of Sm2(C2O4)3·10H2O as a case study

For martensitic transformations the macroscopic crystal strain is directly related to the corresponding structural rearrangement at the microscopic level. In situ optical microscopy observations of the interface migration and the change in crystal shape during a displacive single crystal to single crystal transformation can contribute significantly to understanding the mechanism of the process ...
